Dyslexia specialist, Susan Duguid, has been a licensed Davis® facilitator since 1999 and she has built up considerable experience working with all age groups. Recognising the need for a greater understanding of the emotional needs of clients, Susan became a Human Givens Psychotherapy practitioner in 2005 and this facility greatly enriches her work in dyslexia. She has had wide experience working as a graduate teacher in education and has taught Geography at secondary and higher education level for over 25 years, including, St. Paul’s Girls’ School, Sutton High School GPDS, and South Thames FE College, Putney, before specialising in Dyslexia.
‘While I was lecturing at FE college, I read ‘The Gift of Dyslexia’ by Ron Davis. During my teaching career I had observed some of the characteristics of dyslexia but had little knowledge of how to help children with dyslexia apart from offering coping strategies. For the first time in my career I started to understand those children and teenagers who were labelled as ‘slow’, ‘lazy’, and ‘disruptive’; why they could read words such as ‘dinosaur’ and ‘elephant’ but had difficulties with small words such as ‘a’ and ‘the’ and ‘from’. Reading the book was so exciting and enlightening, that I started to introduce the methods into my work. I have never looked back and find the rewards of using the Davis methods are so extremely satisfying and meaningful’.
